The Karst is in a transition zone between the Mediterranean climate and continental foothills climate. The average annual temperatures are around 12.5 °C with slightly lower values around the northern ridge and the Vallone goriziano area, while milder conditions are found along the coast.
The annual rainfall varies from about 900 to 1400 mm. The moderate rainfall together with the strong permeability of the karst terrain mean that the water deficit, particularly in the summer, is rather high. The Bora wind frequently speeds over a hundred kilometres per hour in autumn and winter, and has a significant influence on the environment by promoting the draining of agricultural land and thus accentuating the droughty soil. During the wine-growing season, however, the wind does not have that impetuosity and violence that it has in the autumn-winter months. This helps the vines. In fact, the presence of moderate winds during the spring and summer months helps to eliminate the mists of the Adriatic Sea, brings down the humidity and makes the sky more serene, thereby increasing solar radiation and temperature.
