The Association

Association of Wine-producers Carso – Kras: over 2000 year of history

The beginnings of the designation of origin Carso – Kras date back to the eighties when with the Decree of the President of the Republic of 17 July 1985 were approved the product specifications. This regulation was based on several rules that direct producers towards the achievement of limited production and high quality.

The Association of Wine-producers Carso – Kras was formed in February 2013 by the wine-growers of the Province of Trieste, who have been operating on karst soil for many generations. The Association, united by a common respect for nature, the protection and enhancement of the landscape, as the bearer of ancient and traditional cultivation techniques, historically formed in a particularly difficult context such as the Karst, grape processing and conservation of old vines. The Association is committed to protect, enhance and serve the interests of wine-growing and wine-growers in the Province of Trieste and some adjacent areas.

The Association and its members undertake such work with great commitment, capacity and proudly conscious of their extraordinary identity and long history, the result of a land of great wines, agriculture and commercial activities.

The territory

The geographical area assigned to the production of DOC “Carso – Kras” wines is an area characterized by the presence of karst phenomena, i.e. bare rocky surfaces with an orography that consists of rocky outcrops and depressions. All of this constitutes a significant limitation for the agricultural use of the land. In addition, from a hydrographical point of view, the Karst is characterized by the presence of caves and caverns, which help to drain all the rainwater in a short time.
